Navy Veteran Launches Nonprofit for Women Veterans in Hampton Roads

A New Chapter for Women Veterans

When Courtney Barber retired after 25 years of service in the U.S. Navy, she never expected to feel lost. However, that’s exactly how she described her experience after leaving the military. "Your identity, your purpose in life, everything was military," Barber explained. "And then, you step out into a world that's unknown to you... So, what do you do?"

This question lingered with her, and she realized it was one that many women veterans in Hampton Roads also faced. Determined to make a difference, Barber took action. In 2023, she founded Hampton Roads Sapphire Veterans, Inc., a nonprofit organization designed specifically for women who had served in the military.

The mission of the organization is clear: to provide support, resources, and a sense of community for female veterans navigating life after service. Barber emphasized the importance of creating a space where women could connect, share their experiences, and find guidance as they transition into civilian life. "There's something unique about being a woman veteran," she said. "We face different challenges, and we need a network that understands that."

Building a Supportive Community

One of the key aspects of Hampton Roads Sapphire Veterans, Inc. is its focus on peer support. The organization brings together women who have served in various branches of the military, allowing them to share their stories and learn from one another. Barber expressed gratitude for the support she has received, but she also emphasized the need for more resources. "Every dollar we get goes directly toward helping women veterans," she said. "We’re always looking for ways to grow and reach more people."
