Community Celebrates Dreams and Unity at Van Buren Mayor’s Prayer Luncheon
In a heartwarming gathering that brought together residents, local leaders, and community organizations, Shay Mooney, a member of the Grammy Award-winning duo Dan + Shay, shared his journey of pursuing dreams with the support of his hometown. The event took place at the Van Buren High School Commons and was hosted by the Van Buren Lions Club, Van Buren Rotary Club, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – Van Buren.
The luncheon was organized as a fundraiser, inspired by suggestions from Chamber President Julie Murray. It quickly gained momentum as these three nonprofit groups joined forces to create an unforgettable experience for attendees. The event was a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of supporting one another's aspirations.
Mooney, a native of Natural Dam, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to speak at the luncheon. “I’ve done a lot of things, sang at the Grammys. I think I was more nervous for this,” he said. “I had all my family, all my friends, and it just kind of means more wherever there’s people who have known you your whole life, that are here to support you.”
With 360 people in attendance, the event sold out completely, showcasing the strong sense of community in Van Buren. Mayor Joe Hurst highlighted the significance of such gatherings, emphasizing how the city comes together during times of need. “Whether it’s churches or civic groups or businesses or individuals, this community never ceases to amaze me,” he said.
Leaders from the three nonprofits expressed their appreciation for the community’s support and explained how the funds raised would benefit various projects in Van Buren. Melanie Brandenburg, president of the GFWC-Women’s League of Van Buren, noted that the money would help provide essential services and initiatives that might not otherwise be included in the city budget.
Mooney’s speech focused on the importance of believing in someone’s dreams and encouraging them to pursue those dreams. He credited much of his success to the unwavering support from his family and community. “I think it’s important to know that nothing is too big and too great. And if you don’t have those voices in your life that are lifting you up and supporting your dreams, then I think that you need to find people that do,” he said.
The nonprofits honored Mooney with a framed print of Downtown Van Buren after his speech. They also surprised one attendee with a cardboard cutout of Mooney, adding a fun and memorable touch to the event.
The luncheon not only celebrated Mooney’s achievements but also served as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the impact of a supportive community. As the event concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of hope and inspiration, knowing that their efforts could make a difference in the lives of others.
Through events like these, Van Buren continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering dreams, supporting one another, and building a brighter future for all.
